Mary Jo McMillen has been in long-term recovery from substance use since September 16, 1985. For 22 years she worked as a Substance Use Disorder Counselor. In 2007 Mary Jo became a founding board member of Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness (USARA) and in 2010 she became the Executive Director. USARA’s mission is to connect and inspire people and communities to advocate for addiction recovery. In 2011 USARA opened Utah’s first Recovery Community Center. During the past 10 years, USARA has developed and implemented peer-delivered Recovery Support Services in local communities where they are readily available for people seeking help. Mary Jo credits the amazing USARA team of Peer Recovery Coaches, Family Support Coaches, and volunteers who collaboratively work with community leaders, government entities, treatment providers, healthcare clinics, hospitals, public health, courts, jails and probation services, homeless shelters, and others to help individuals and family members connect with resources they need to support their recovery from addiction.
